Illiteracy as a good thing

Ah metaphors. The simple act of comparing two things. Which can be be useful when comparing literacy to adaptation, power and a state of grace, much like Sylvia Scribner did in "Literacy in Three Metaphors". The first comparison that Scribner makes is a functional literacy. This is the skills that we have in order to perform simple tasks. The second and third comparison show intelligence and also elegance.
In Thompson's article regarding the new literacy, he takes Carr's topic of the internet bringing us down, and reverses it to show a positive. The positive is that the immense amounts of technology is actually reviving the writing and literacy of the younger generation. He also cites his information. Which was nice.
As far as Hedges' article, I agree with the things that he said, but only to an extent. We are not getting dumber. We are dumb in comparison to the technology that surrounds us. And we're getting lazy. Which is my primary concern. The laziness is understood however, because of all of the technology. Our lives are getting significantly easier thanks to the Internet, laptops, smartphones, etc.

  1. I agree with the citations in the Thompson article being nice. Do you agree with Scribner's definitions of literacy? Do you think that the literacy line should be drawn where the minimum requirements for functionality in society are met?
