I didn't necessarily understand the blog post "The Press Sphere" at first. Maybe because I spent the weekend at Winter Carnival in Winter Park. Or maybe because it was actually a strange topic to comprehend. Who knows.
Anyways, it was a very interesting article. The model that he used to define the press sphere was very unusual and confusing, at least to me. I do agree that the model has changed to the more self-centered system of reading the news. Jarvis had a link in his post that read, "if the news is important it will find me." I agree with this statement. Not necessarily for me, but for a majority of the American population.
Also, we have turned the news into all different kinds of sources. For example, we have newspapers, websites, word of mouth, non-media press (Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert) and many other sources that we could gather what is occurring in the world today. I don't think that all of the different kinds of sources are bad. I think that if we have the mindset of "if the news is important, it will find me" we (America) will turn into a larger group of ignorant fools.
That's a really interesting quote, that "if the news is important it will find me." I wonder, then, what kind of news is more likely to find us and what kind of news is not. I don't think it's just a matter of what's "important" but of who decides what is important and to whom. For example, somebody thinks spam email is really important, while arguably more significant news (economic scene and housing bubble prior to crash) gets less attention.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good point. I'm actually kinda disappointed that I didn't think to put that in there.
